49, 50 or 51... How a successful career change can be made at any age

“I am in a really happy place right now”, says Laura Taylor, The Digital Marketing Trainer at Starting Off.

At 51 she has made a career change for the good.

“It all started when I was 49”, she explains. “I ran my own successful small business. I was a private French teacher. I loved the teaching and the children, but I wasn’t happy with my career direction.

She explains that she had started teaching in nursery and primary schools, when her second child didn’t take to nursery. “It was easy to do and served its purpose whilst my children grew up. I loved it for years.”

Prior to that Laura had worked in marketing, in the UK and the Middle East. “I really missed the pace and challenge, so I decided to make a change. I researched where marketing was now and the market needs.”

By 50, I had completed Squared Online, the digital marketing leadership course, and had caught the eye of Starting Off, successfully taking my first steps in making my career change.

“I have just had my fifty-first birthday, and I have achieved so much. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the whole team at Starting Off”. Laura has combined her teaching and marketing skills to develop the Level 3 Digital Marketer Apprenticeship Programme. “I have been mentored by some great assessors, learning and developing new skills. I have built my passion for marketing and digital marketing into seven modules on a virtual learning platform, so that our apprentices can learn wherever they are. It’s such an exciting programme and a fantastic opportunity for young people who want to get into a vibrant industry. I am developing a great set of workshops, and my apprentices go on to do Squared too. The apprenticeship standard has criteria that I work with the employer on, to collect evidence of the apprentice’s experience in the workplace. It’s just all so exciting. I love the fact that Dan and Hellie saw an opportunity in me”.

“Of course, it’s not all about work. Another great thing that has come out of this career change; quite often, I get home and my teenagers have cooked dinner for me!”

“The advice I would give to those tired with the direction of their jobs, is to look at all of your options, and all the skills you have, not just the ones you are using now, and follow your heart.”

“Stay positive, don’t look at how you can’t do something, but how you can overcome any objections!”
