From bedroom to young business person of the year

“I am eager to learn new things everyday, and I learnt alot back when I was an apprentice. That’s why I’m eager to pass down my knowledge to train my own team of Quantity Surveyors and Estimators.”

In today’s society, there is a stigma that the younger generation, known as ‘millennials’, are lazy and lack the tenacity to succeed in business. But for one man, it isn’t the case. He was ambitious and determined enough to work hard, building multiple companies from scratch, which has clearly paid off, earning him his recent ‘Young Business Person of the Year’ award. And that’s only just the beginning…

When Parm Bhangal was younger, he was once asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. He responded that he wanted to be a Quantity Surveyor. People laughed and found it a bit odd, but with his flair for maths and analytical business mindset, it was the perfect fit for him.

It all began when Parm was 17, when he attended a sporting awards dinner, where he met the Director of a large groundworks company; he was so impressed with Parm’s attitude, that he decided to offer him 6 weeks work experience. This was the start of what would become a successful career for Parm. After completing his work experience, he was offered a job and was able to complete his degree in Quantity Surveying at Birmingham City University.

“It was incredible to have won this award. I’ve had nothing but a positive response ever since, and it’s already boosted business ready for the new year.”

After graduating, he began working for a company in London, which he grew to dislike due to an unpleasant manager. He quit the job, despite worrying in the back of his mind that his “mum might kill him!” and embarked upon his first business venture, Bhangals Construction Consultants.

Parm’s first office was his bedroom and since then, Bhangals Construction Consultants has grown to become a key player in both the Northamptonshire and London construction industry; offering its services to Architects, Property Developers, Builders and Self- Builders for residential, commercial and community projects.

In 2014, Parm was approached by a large builders merchant to be the sole provider of their estimating services. However, they needed an estimating firm rather than a full QS service. This was one of the many challenges Parm has had to face during his career, but being determined as ever to win new business, he decided to start a new venture by launching My Build Estimate; providing accurate, affordable and professional building estimates to clients across the UK.

As business was growing, he needed employees to join him on his journey. So in mid-2015, he purchased office space in Horton and hired his first full-time employee. More recruits quickly followed, eager to join his enthusiastic, young team; he has taught them all they need to know about estimating and now the team sits happily as a group of ten.

“I am eager to learn new things everyday, and I learnt alot back when I was an apprentice. That’s why I’m eager to pass down my knowledge to train my own team of Quantity Surveyors and Estimators.”

Parm has recently been announced as the winner of the ‘Young Business Person of the Year’ at the Northamptonshire SME Business Awards; something which he was advised to apply for by his business coach, as it was an opportunity to gain further exposure for the businesses and recognition from peers for his efforts.

Parm Bhangal commented: “It was incredible to have won this award. I’ve had nothing but a positive response ever since, and it’s already boosted business ready for the new year.” Bhangals has been shortlisted for the National SME Awards for the same category, which takes place in December 2018.

During 2017, Bhangals Construction Consultants has worked on some major projects including, Waterside Connect in Northampton; a Sikh temple and community centre, which will be open for all local residents to enjoy. They have also worked on large projects in London, including 150 apartments on Seven Sisters Road.

The team are keen to help the local community and regularly do charity work including providing food to the homeless and holding a coffee morning to raise money for cancer sufferers.

Overall, 2017 has been a challenging year, but a year of huge growth for Bhangals. They are confident that the positive momentum will continue into 2018 as they look to expand their business by taking over another office next door to them. They will continue their commitment to the recruitment and training of staff and aim to become the leading all-round quantity surveying and estimating firm in the UK.

We asked Parm what advice he would give to the millennials of today on starting their own business: “My advice to anyone who is looking to start their own business is that it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be a lot of hard graft and there are going to be a lot of upsides and downsides along the way. But it’s so worth the leap of faith and sometimes you’ve just got to go for it and hope it works out, but you won’t know unless you give it a go. I was lucky to have the support of my friends and family, otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am today”.

An inspiring story for all young budding entrepreneurs, who have an idea of starting their own business but feel like they can’t do it, or there’s certain obstacles in the way. Parm is a true example of someone who has successfully done it and walking proof that you really can do anything, if you put your mind to it.
