Grant Thornton tops regional and national M&A adviser league tables

Grant Thornton has been ranked as the number one financial adviser in the East of England for the number of M&A deals completed last year and has also topped the national league tables, according to a new report from corporate information services company Experian.

The study data confirmed that for the second year running, Grant Thornton was the most active firm in the region, advising on 20 major deals during 2017.

In total, 567 M&A deals were carried out in the East of England last year; almost 7% of all UK transactions. This represents a fall of just under 4% on 2016 volumes but remains substantially higher than the average yearly deal count since 2009.

Despite total deal value in the East of England dropping 55% to £17.9bn during 2017, the region still ranked third in terms of transaction value, falling only behind the Republic of Ireland (£24.7bn) and Greater London (£165.2bn) and accounting for 8% of combined value across the UK.

Nationally, Grant Thornton advised on 165 publicly disclosed deals and 179 transactions overall last year, with a total value of £5.5bn. This represents a 25% increase in deal volume on 2016 levels at a time when the total number of deals across the UK market fell by 5.5%.

Mike Hughes, director at Grant Thornton’s East of England Corporate Finance team, said: “Whilst the overall deal market experienced some economic and political headwinds during 2017, it was a busy and exciting year for our team as highlighted by the latest Experian findings.

“Topping the league tables both regionally and nationally is a great accomplishment for Grant Thornton and underlines that our team’s deep sector expertise, local relationships, international reach and joined up approach in all aspects dealmaking is really resonating with the market. We are entering 2018 on a very strong footing and are well positioned for further growth this year.”

Notable deals carried out in Northamptonshire by Grant Thornton last year include the sale of Earls Barton based packaging company Woodway Packaging Limited to FTSE 100 international distribution and outsourcing group, Bunzl PLC. Also the acquisition of print solutions business Eclipse Web Limited in Kettering by marketing communications group GI Solutions.
