My father always told me that the happiest people he knew in life were those who ‘loved what they did’. It is a sentiment I believe in too.
So follow my love I did - and it was anything to do with sport. From watching football, rugby, boxing, to representing my county at Netball, Running and Hockey - I lived for sport. I left school and went to University to study Physical Education. In the late 80’s I moved to Australia and on returning to the UK I opened my own fitness and exercise club in Kettering, which ran for 15 years.
It was a warm September afternoon in 2005 that I stumbled across an old stone farmhouse, with horses grazing on its green pastures - Homefield Grange, set on the edge of Rushton village. Walking down its sweeping driveway, I knew at that moment this place would be the ideal venue to take the next step in my business journey.
Homefield Grange has now been trading for 14 years and has grown to a team of 25 staff - including Naturopathic Practitioners, Wellness Coaches, Nutritionists, Hypnotherapists, Health Chefs and mind body professionals. The company’s purpose is to help its guests look and feel better in order to cope with the challenges of life.
Clients from all over the world visit for tailored and personalised wellness programmes delivered either within a residential stay, a day, or as a ‘one off’. Lifestyle advice on specific health concerns, nutritional advice, diagnostic testing, or simply providing a luxury venue to let go of the world and de-stress - Homefield provides the time and space to do so in style.
Typical clients are business people, career climbers, burnt out entrepreneurs, those who have been given a diagnosis, to celebrities preparing for their next big thing. No matter who they are, they all seek a common goal, that of wanting to ‘live life well’.
When I look back over my career as a Naturopathic Practitioner, Coach, Trainer and Business Owner, my passion has only grown stronger. And my belief that your health is your greatest investment is paramount.
Taking care of yourself is vitally important if you are to face the inevitable stressors that being in the world of business brings - however I know from experience that business people are particularly good at putting everything in their life in front of themselves. However, neglecting ourselves means we are actually neglecting others. And if you are too tired, too stressed, too ill, too overworked - the people who are most important to you, whether it be your family, friends, employees, they will suffer - you simply cannot give from an empty chalice.
I sincerely wish that through my new monthly column here at All Things Business, my training and experience will offer you some valuable, practical and realistic advice that motivates change where needed. Life is for living - as well as for business - let’s do them both well.
