Who are My Milton Keynes?

We’re one of over 300 Business Improvement District’s operating in the UK. BIDs are business-led and business funded organisations, formed to improve a defined commercial area - in our case Central Milton Keynes.

Our board of directors represent a variety of business leaders from National HQ Managers to local Business Directors, and we work closely with key organisations to develop our operations, events and marketing activities.

MyMiltonKeynes is one of only 30 BIDs to have attained official British BID accreditation, following thorough assessment across business components including governance, financials, performance management, communications, reporting and operations.

Professor Christopher Turner, CEO British BIDs says “We are extremely pleased to have awarded MyMiltonKeynes BID accreditiation. The in-depth process allows BIDs to step back and re-evaluate how they are operating to make sure they are meeting the highest level of provision possible for the business community. Accreditation allows levy payers and stakeholders to have a high level of confidence in the BID team, which in turn, gives reassurance in the ability to deliver positive change.”

“Its hard to believe that we have just commenced the third year of the BID in Central Milton Keynes.

But then I look at what the staff at MyMiltonKeynes have undertaken in that time. Two Mybus shuttles running our businesspeople around CMK, over 6,000 users on the MK App and over 5000 conversions of the exclusive discounts. Two tonnes of rubbish and needles pulled out of the landscaping each month, 470 square metres of new planting, uplighters in the trees through Midsummer Boulevard, two joint funded police officers dedicated to CMK and endless Christmas light reminds me of the achievements in two short years.”

The work of MyMiltonKeynes

Our organisation is committed to making Central Milton Keynes; Safe, Sparkling, Mobile, Intelligent and Amazing. Just two years in, we’ve delivered a range of activities from landscaping, deep-cleaning and pest control in the public realm, to funding two city-centre dedicated Thames Valley Police officers, who’re not only providing a prominent police presence but also delivering personal safety guidance directly to the work force. We’ve also committed funds to furnish the ‘first stage hostel’ at the brand-new YMCA campus, in a bid to support a long-term solution to homelessness on the streets. Plus, we’ve given Midsummer Boulevard a well needed facelift with the installation of LED uplighters – look out for the seasonal and event calendar colour changes.

But that’s not all, we’ve also developed a tech driven mobile app for employees working within our district. Serving the workforce with smart solutions to locating a parking space, special rewards to save money and promote businesses in the city centre and, most importantly, a free to use hop-on hop-off shuttle service – two buses, connecting 21 city-wide locations, running from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. You’ve probably seen the bright red buses on your travels – you can’t miss them!

One of the important strands of work is our research-based activity. At the MyMiltonKeynes we pride ourselves in only undertaking projects once we have established the desire and the need. Our current research is looking at what sectors of business make up Central Milton Keynes. This work will be fed into MKC’s Growth and Skills strategy currently being consulted on.

What’s next?

Whilst we continue those activities already making great improvements to Central Milton Keynes, we’re always looking to bring even more to the city centre. We’re setting out to animate Central Milton Keynes with events and creative experiences – from the festive light installations, engaging charitable events and sponsoring community activations like the MK Soapbox Derby just a few weeks ago.

Exciting news

Throughout July, we’ll install an outdoor cinema screen in the Fred Roche Gardens (behind the Church of Christ the Cornerstone) to bring great entertainment to the heart of the city!

From international sporting events, kicking off with Wimbledon 1st-14th July, to the astounding aquatic talents of Team GB diving at the World Championships. Join us to soak up some sunshine, cheer on our champs, or just relax in our very own Central Park. You could even bring your team out of the office for some business thinking as we’ve sessions of TED Talks – where you’re in control of the channel. And, as the sun goes down on Friday and Saturday evenings there’ll be blockbuster hits for all the family to enjoy.

So grab your picnics, and a blanket, and head out to Fred Roche Gardens this July for the perfect summer escape – we’ve even got gorgeous deck chairs to lounge in!

It may only be July, but plans for later this year are already afoot – we’ll soon begin installing brand-new festive lights along Midsummer Boulevard, we’ll be bringing an even bigger and better Christmas Lights Switch On event, and we’re working on a few surprises too!
