£40k investment pays off with excellent results

Nobby’s brewery grew from humble beginnings back in 2004 in the back cellar of the Alexandra Arms, Kettering, where the then landlord and friend “Nip” Thornley actively encouraged the production of excellent real ales so we were happy to assist. We originally installed a 2.5 barrel brewery and begin to supply local Northamptonshire public houses and beer festivals, soon doubling the size of the brewery to 5 barrel plant.

In 2007 a move to bigger premises was required and we found our next home in Guilsborough, a small village in Northamptonshire, offering the historic old barns at The Ward Arms on the High Street. Here we installed a 12 barrel brewery designed by Nobby and expanded our supply area to a 50 Mile radius. We produced hand bottled conditioned ales which we sold to local Co-op stores and Independent retailers quickly gaining a reputation for their excellence across the Midlands.

In 2014 another move brought us to a small industrial estate in Thrapston, Northamptonshire where we now have the same trusty 12 barrel brewery, but a whole load of fermentation tanks allowing us to brew up to four times a week and store beer for kegging and bottling.

A 40k investment in 2015 allowed us to install a bottling plant, further tanks, filtering, laboratory & packaging equipment, a facility that allows us to control quality and production of our own bottled beers. It also allows our fellow brewers to take advantage of it too in the form of contract bottling.

Nobby's have enjoyed working with other local businesses and produced our first collaboration Craft Ale in 2017 with the guys at The Smoke Pit, Northampton with 'Burnt Ox Blood', a 5% Red IPA packed full of hops and char-grilled blood oranges. This was produced in keg and later in can when it went on to win the New Local Drink of the Year 2017/18 at the Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards.

We have just completed another collaboration with The Beer Garage, Northampton with 'Cirrus' a 4.2% Helles Lager, brewed using the Reinheitsgebot German Purity Law resulting in a crisp smooth lager, totally Vegan friendly and available from the end of April.

The majority of our business has always been in the cask ales, and 2019 will see a continued growth in our range of seasonal ales using a variety of hops from around the world. We also have plans to further develop our Craft Keg Ale selection, our first being the aforementioned Helles Lager.. We will continue to produce, and bottle in house, our range of 500ml bottled products and will be introducing a range of canned craft ales later in the year. The brewery is also looking into the possibilities of further investment in a Brewery Tap to enable us to offer the full consumer experience from cask, keg, bottle and can... Brewery Tours are already available to book giving insight into the brewing process and taste a selection of different styles of ales.
