A company offering plumbing and gas services to a wide range of companies across all industries, has experienced year-on-year growth since it started nine years ago.
Plumbing & Gas Solutions Limited of Wymbush, Milton Keynes was established by managing director Carl Yeomanson, after 6 years as a sole trader alongside his full-time day job in the fire service. 17 years ago he decided he wanted to re-train as a plumber and started studying at college in the evenings. Once qualified, he tried to get an apprenticeship but found that most places were looking for a younger apprentice.
“There I was, a twenty one year old with a mortgage to pay, and found that companies wanted teenage apprentices they could pay the minimum apprenticeship wage to,” said Carl.
After completing college & numerous free placements, Carl placed an advert in the local paper and worked as a sole trader. He also studied further, gaining additional qualifications in natural gas, LPG and oil and learning other trades such as tiling, woodwork and plastering. He then secured a contract with Homebase & Wickes, which saw him carry out full bathroom installations, from the plumbing through to the tiling. He soon had two vans and made the decision to leave his job as a firefighter.
In 2010, he set up Plumbing & Gas Solutions Ltd armed with four vans and a business plan. The company saw 100% growth year-on-year for the first four years and has continued to grow every year since, retaining all of its customers in that time.
Plumbing & Gas Solutions now has a fleet of 12 branded vehicles and employs 16 people, with plans to recruit four more people by the end of the year.
“I have found that put simply people and businesses just want reliable tradespeople,” said Carl.
“I have built the business on being reliable, trustworthy and quality customer service. These are our brand values. Brand is hugely important to us and we have invested in administration, call-answering staff & management roles who can help us to achieve this.”
Investing in staff is something else that is hugely important to Carl. He takes on one or two apprentices each year and they follow a clear programme that sees them progress through the company.
“We are only as good as our staff,” said Carl. “Our team is vital to our success, so we offer a clear training pathway that ensures every team member is not only adequately trained, but content in their role too.”
Over the years, Carl and his team have worked – and continue to work - with some big household names including Yamaha, WD40, Stadium MK/DoubleTree By Hilton, Securitas and Cranfield University. It has also worked with holiday company Centre Parcs for the last 3 years now, looking after the plumbing and heating for 700 holiday lodges at its newest Woburn Forest Park, and has carried out numerous commercial boiler replacement works for the historic Woburn Estate in Bedfordshire, home to Woburn Abbey and Woburn Safari Park.
Other interesting projects have included working with Bletchley Park, once the top-secret home of the World War Two Codebreakers and now a heritage attraction open to the public. With multiple fuel sources going into the running of the nineteenth-century building and estate, there is a chance of something breaking down. Managers of the estate wanted to avoid costly emergencies and ensure the safety of their staff and visitors at all times, so they employ Plumbing & Gas Solutions to maintain the site’s oil, plumbing and gas.
The company now serves over 200 commercial clients including 43 schools across Northamptonshire, as well as commercial buildings and warehouses. It also has contracts with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Milton Keynes and Bletchley Colleges. Its services include industrial and commercial gas installations, servicing, repairs and annual maintenance, washroom installations, general commercial plumbing works and leak detection. “We have built a business on solid foundations and brand values that our customers appreciate,” said Carl. “We’re a very reactive business with lots of jobs on the go but never at the expense of customer service.
“The last nine years have been hard work but worthwhile. I’ve always been goal oriented and a stickler for good values. This, in my opinion, is why we have never lost a customer. I look forward to seeing what Plumbing & Gas Solutions can achieve in the next nine years and beyond.”
