One year on…
Rushden Lakes, a development that was long in the waiting, opened its doors last year and is now celebrating its first birthday. It has welcomed some of the biggest retailers in the UK to our county, created nearly 1,000 jobs and embraced local businesses that want to prosper. The shopping destination provides something different for individuals, couples and families with impressive views of the countryside and a wetland nature reserve to enjoy, and, with a wide range of dining options, it is proving a great choice for those that want to experience everything the area has to offer.
All Things Business spoke to Hayley Turley, Asset Manager for Rushden Lakes.
How has the first year gone overall?
Rushden Lakes has had a fantastic first year. We are fully let and work on the new leisure terrace is progressing well with the cinema and new restaurants set to open early next year. By combining great shopping and dining together with a broad range of outdoor activities, including nature trails through the wetlands and canoeing on the lake, we’ve created a truly unique destination which is a real attraction for Northamptonshire, and is proving incredibly popular with local people as well as visitors who travel from further afield to experience Rushden Lakes.
What are the priorities for you over the next 12 months?
Community engagement and wellbeing are key priorities for us and we are currently supporting Rushden Town Council and their new ‘Your Town’ initiative. Since opening we have supported the likes of the OVO Energy Women’s Cycling Tour and a local concert featuring HMS Collingwood’s band of Royal Marines. Our recent Recruit Rushden Lakes Jobs & Skills Fair in May brought 315 local job seekers together with local businesses and recruitment specialists to help support them into employment – with roles available with retailers at Rushden Lakes as well as other local businesses in the wider Rushden area.
Is there a particular highlight so far and what can we look forward to?
We are proud of our partnership with The Wildlife Trusts, who manage the Nene Wetlands nature reserve, and for us, Rushden Lakes has proven the power of working in partnership with the right people. Rushden Lakes is more than a shopping park, it is a destination which brings together the very best in retail, restaurants and the great outdoors to deliver something special for the local area – and with the impending arrival of the leisure terrace there will be even more to explore early next year.
