For many years Starting Off have been working closely with Moore Stephens accountants to help train their staff using the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification.
Moore Stephens are a national and international firm of accountants with 36 offices in the UK, and locally they have been a great supporter of Starting Off’s AAT programme and the opportunities offered by the Accounting Apprenticeship standards. There are now seven members of staff at the Moore Stephens Corby office who have trained using Starting Off and the AAT route, four of whom have since gone onto ACCA and other higher qualifications and three who are currently studying AAT, a testament to the value that, as employers, they place on the AAT qualification.
Associate Tim Woodgates completed AAT with Starting Off back in 2012 and has since done ACCA and specialised in tax with the CTA qualification. He has seen at first hand the benefit of AAT for himself and all the other staff that have been through the programme.
“AAT gives a solid grounding of the basic principles of accounts, ensuring staff understand the component parts of how a set of accounts are actually put together. These are core skills that underpin everything in accounts”.
Chloe Hickman finished her AAT in 2018 and was shortlisted for the AAT Apprentice of the Year award in 2017. She feels that AAT gives you the “absolute foundation” you need for the job and for going on to the higher qualifications such as ACCA. “Doing the AAT qualification means you have the core skills required when preparing accounts for clients. It ensures you have good knowledge and practical skills in bookkeeping, VAT returns, tax and management accounts.” Chloe is now doing her ACCA under the Level 7 Apprenticeship scheme and is mentoring a new member of staff on their AAT journey with Starting Off.
Former AAT Apprentice Dan Little who has recently finished his ACCA now fully appreciates the good grounding that AAT gives those looking to work in accounts. “The lower levels give you practical knowledge of the key accounting areas whilst the higher level gives you insight into the more complex topics such as International Accounting Standards. This has been of great help when going onto ACCA.”
Moore Stephens have developed a strong support and mentoring programme for new staff and use the AAT qualification as an integral part of this to develop and train their employees. They now have a great set of highly skilled, dedicated and long-serving employees who are all an asset to the company.
Client Manager Jen Arber who completed her AAT back in 2011 sums up the value of AAT for Moore Stephens: “The AAT qualification has proven itself time and time again to provide the fundamental skills that are essential to building a career in accountancy. Starting Off provide a flexible way for our staff to gain this qualification alongside invaluable work experience, and the end results speak for themselves! The AAT has quickly become a well-regarded route for our firm when we recruit.”
